What's new at Massamba's Help

News from the association, volunteer activities and practical guides on social rights, CPAS procedures and legal orientation.

Preparing your CPAS application: what you need to know

The CPAS (public social welfare centre) is often the first place to turn when you have no income. Before your appointment, it helps to gather a few documents: your identity card, proof of address (or a reference address), proof of income or absence of income, and any letters you have already received from the centre.

You do not need a complete file to make a first request — the CPAS can guide you. If you are unsure which documents are needed or how to explain your situation, our volunteers can help you prepare before you go. The goal is simple: arrive calmly, with your documents sorted, and be heard.

Our volunteers complete a new training cycle on social rights

This summer, our volunteers took part in a new training cycle on social rights in Belgium: the role of the CPAS, reference addresses, health insurance and the rights of people without stable housing. The sessions were built around concrete situations we meet every week.

Training is a core part of our work. It allows us to keep our first-line guidance accurate, respectful and up to date. Every person who comes to us is welcomed by a trained volunteer who listens, clarifies the situation and directs to the right service.

Understanding the letters you receive from the CPAS

An administrative letter can be hard to read, especially under stress. A letter from the CPAS or another service almost always has a deadline, and missing that deadline can have serious consequences.

Three things to look for first: what the letter is about (a request for information, a decision, a summons), the deadline (usually printed near the end), and what to do (reply, appeal, provide a document).

If a letter seems unclear or urgent, bring it to us. We read it with you, explain it in simple words and help you decide the next step — including how to appeal a decision within the time limit.

Massamba's Help at the community information day in Berlaar

Our volunteers took part in a community information day in Berlaar to make the association and its services known to residents and partner organisations. We handed out simple information cards explaining where to turn for help with housing, benefits and legal questions.

Being present in the community matters: many people do not know that free first-line orientation exists. Days like this help us reach them before a situation becomes urgent.
